Ace a job interview with this start and finish

What’s the most important way to start off a job interview? Offer a firm “hire-me” handshake! A recent University of Iowa study reveals that job interviewers base their initial impression of you on whether your handshake is strong or wimpy. In fact, your handshake carries more weight than what you’re wearing or how you style your hair. The reason? Unlike our clothing and hairstyles—which we usually change for a job interview—a handshake is one of few traits that provides a glimpse into a person’s personality, explains study author Greg Stewart, Ph.D. So, what does a strong handshake say about you? You’re extroverted, confident and friendly—all qualities employers look for!

Want to increase your chances of hearing back from an interviewer? Follow up with a thank-you note! Nine out of ten employers say they’re more likely to hire someone who sends a thank-you after their interview—yet only 49% of interviewees send one, according to a recent Accountemps survey. But, skip an emailed note of thanks—most employers prefer the old-fashioned hand-written kind.
