Easy way to save the lives of birds and dolphins

by Gabrielle on January 18, 2010

Plastic bottle caps aren’t accepted by most recycling programs because they’re made from a material that isn’t easily recycled. Yet, thrown away, the caps end up in landfills, rivers and ocean where birds, dolphins, manatees and other marine life mistake them for food, eat them, and then starve to death as they try to digest the plastic. To the rescue: The Recycle Caps with Aveda program that lets you drop off all your plastic screw-off and flip-top bottle caps—from water, soda, milk, shampoo, ketchup, mayo, peanut butter, laundry detergent and other bottles—at any Aveda hair salon. From there, they’re sent to a recycler who specializes in turning them into new caps and containers. Find an Aveda salon near you at aveda.com.
