Get higher-ups to say “yes”

by Gabrielle on January 22, 2010

Want to pitch a new project to your boss or ask for a raise? Looking to convince the P.T.A. president to go along with your great idea for a fund raiser? Want your child’s teacher to pay more attention to her? You’ll have better luck getting the response you want if you bring up the subject in the lunchroom, parking lot, elevator or any place else other than where the person does her or his work. The reason? When higher-ups are surrounded by cues that remind them they’re the ones in charge, their confidence in their own opinions is high, so they’re less likely to agree with a new proposal, Ohio State University psychologists found. But when you get head honchos out of their work environment, their confidence decreases, which makes them more open to agreeing with your suggestion.
