Can’t remember appointments or have trouble concentrating? Trying to solve a sticky problem or come up with an inventive redecorating idea? Certain colors can help! In a University of British Columbia study, people who spent a few moments gazing at something red before a memory test scored better than average—and those who eyed the color blue scored higher on tests gauging creativity and imagination. Researchers theorize that we’re conditioned to slow down when we see red—for instance, at stop signs and red lights—which helps us focus, while blue helps us feel calm, which makes us feel more relaxed and open to unique, outside-the-box ideas.
