You’ve probably sipped it before for its famed soothing powers. Now scientists say you may want to reach for a cup of chamomile during cold season to avoid getting sick. In a recent study conducted at Imperial College, London, researchers gave men and women five cups of chamomile tea daily for two weeks. What they found: Drinking the tea increased their body’s levels of hippurate, a compound that can support your immune system, helping your body fend off infections associated with colds.
Tip: Pour a cup to relieve painful menstrual cramps. Chamomile tea increases levels of glycine, an amino acid known to relieve the muscle spasms that cause cramping.
