It’s “I”! If you think people may be pulling the wool over your eyes, then pay closer attention to the words they use. If they don’t refer to themselves, avoid talking about their personal feelings or keep their remarks short and gloss over the details, what they’re saying probably isn’t true, according to a series of studies conducted by British researcher Richard Wiseman, Ph.D., author of Quirkology: The Curious Science of Everyday Lives. The reason? The lack of “I” and personal feelings is a way for liars to “distance themselves from the deceit,” he says. And as for being so brief, it’s out of fear of being found out. “When it comes to lying, the more information you give away, the greater the chances of some of it coming back to haunt you.”
