For what? Anything—your health, a loving family, a favor a friend did for you, the cuddles from a pet, even for the babysitter arriving on time. “Counting your blessings pushes away negative thoughts and puts you in a positive frame of mind immediately,” says Christopher Peterson, Ph.D., author of A Primer in Positive Psychology. In a recent study from a research team out of the University of Miami and the University of California, Davis, people who were asked to increase the number of times they said “thank you” every day reported feeling significantly better about their lives, less stressed and more optimistic.
